how to bet on player shots on target - football on a pitch

My brother, player shots on target bets look easy. Your striker is in form, the price says 1.70 for one shot on target, and you think, "this guy shoots every match." Then he plays 58 minutes, fires two shots into the stand and one into a defender's leg, and your slip dies. This guide shows you how to bet on player shots on target the careful way: what actually counts, how bookmakers settle these bets, how to turn a player's shot numbers into a real probability, and how to tell when a price is worth taking.

18+ only. Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, gambling in Nigeria is regulated at state level (for example by LSLGA in Lagos), while the NLRC still covers the FCT. Cloudbet, which we link for crypto sports betting, is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator. Every odd, stake and statistic below is an illustrative example, not a live price or a tip.

What a player shots on target bet is

A player shots on target bet is a prop on one named player. You are betting on how many of his shots are on target during the match, not on the result. The most common line is over 0.5, meaning he needs at least one shot on target for you to win. You will also see over 1.5 (two or more), over 2.5, and sometimes "under" sides or exact counts.

The appeal is clear. You do not need your player's team to win. A striker on a losing side can still test the keeper three times. The danger is also clear: one player, one match, small numbers. A single substitution, an early red card or a tactical change can kill the bet before half-time.

What counts as a shot on target (and what does not)

This is where many Nigerian punters lose money without understanding why. Football data companies use a fairly standard definition, and bookmakers settle on the data provider they name in their rules. In general:

SituationUsually counts as shot on target?
Shot saved by the goalkeeperYes
Shot that goes in (a goal)Yes
Shot that would have gone in but is cleared off the line by a defender (last man)Usually yes
Shot that hits the post or crossbar and comes outNo
Shot blocked by an outfield defender before reaching goalNo (it is a blocked shot)
Shot that goes wide or overNo
Own goal credited to an opponentNo, not for your player
Penalty saved or scored in normal timeYes
Penalty in a shootout after extra timeNo, shootouts are normally excluded

Two points deserve attention. First, woodwork does not count. Every punter has a story about a player who hit the bar twice. Second, the official stat can be changed after the match if the data provider reviews a deflection. Most bookmakers settle on the figure at the time of settlement, so check what your book says about late corrections.

Settlement rules you must check before staking

Rules differ between bookmakers, so read the prop rules page once, properly, before you make this a habit. The points that matter most:

Write the key rules down for each site you use. It takes ten minutes and saves arguments with customer support later.

Turning a shot average into a probability

Here is the core skill. Shots on target are rare, countable events, which makes them a good fit for a simple tool called the Poisson distribution. You do not need to be a maths teacher. You need one number: your estimate of how many shots on target the player will have in this match, called lambda (λ).

Once you have λ, the probability of at least one shot on target is:

P(1 or more) = 1 − e−λ

The e here is about 2.718; any phone calculator has the button. The probability of two or more is 1 − e−λ × (1 + λ). Here is a ready table so you do not have to calculate every time.

Expected shots on target (λ)P(1+)Fair odds for over 0.5P(2+)Fair odds for over 1.5
0.433.0%3.036.2%16.1
0.645.1%2.2212.2%8.20
0.750.3%1.9915.6%6.41
0.959.3%1.6922.8%4.40
1.166.7%1.5030.1%3.32
1.475.3%1.3340.8%2.45

Look at how fast things change. A player you think will average 0.6 shots on target is close to a coin flip at best. Many punters see "he scores a lot" and assume over 0.5 is almost certain. It rarely is. Poisson is a simplification, because shots are not perfectly independent, but it is far better than gut feeling and it is the same basic idea many models start from.

Step one: get a clean per-90 number

Most stats sites show shots on target per 90 minutes. Use that, not shots per match, because a player who often comes off at 60 minutes looks worse per match than he really is, and a player who always plays 90 looks better. A few habits make the number cleaner:

Step two: adjust for expected minutes

This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that matters most. Your per-90 number assumes 90 minutes. Your player rarely plays all of it.

Suppose a striker averages 0.9 shots on target per 90. If he plays the full match, λ is 0.9 and the chance of at least one is 59.3%. But if his coach usually subs him around 70 minutes, his expected minutes are about 70, so:

λ = 0.9 × 70 ÷ 90 = 0.70, and P(1+) = 1 − e−0.70 ≈ 50.3%.

Same player, same form, and the fair price moves from about 1.69 to about 1.99. If the bookmaker offers 1.80, it looks like value for a 90-minute player and looks poor for a 70-minute player. Check recent substitution patterns, fixture congestion (midweek European games mean rotation), and whether he is returning from injury, because coaches often limit minutes after a layoff.

Step three: adjust for the opponent and the game state

Shots on target depend on how much of the ball and how many chances a team creates, and that depends on who they are playing. A simple adjustment works well:

  1. Find your player's team average shots on target per match, say 4.5.
  2. Find how many shots on target the opponent concedes per match, say 3.5, and the league average, say 4.2.
  3. Adjust the team figure: 4.5 × (3.5 ÷ 4.2) ≈ 3.75 expected team shots on target.
  4. Multiply by your player's share. If he takes about a quarter of his team's shots on target, his λ is 3.75 × 0.25 ≈ 0.94 for 90 minutes, then adjust for minutes as above.

Game state matters too. A big favourite that scores early may slow down and protect the lead, which can reduce shots in the second half. An underdog that falls behind may push forward and shoot more from distance, which raises shots but often lowers accuracy. Think about how the match is likely to flow, not just the pre-match averages.

Reading the bookmaker's price and margin

Prop markets carry bigger margins than the main match result, because fewer people bet them and the book takes more risk on information like lineups. Here is an illustrative two-way market:

SelectionOddsImplied probabilityMargin-free probability
Over 0.5 shots on target1.6261.7%57.6%
Under 0.5 shots on target2.2045.5%42.4%
Total107.2%100%

That 7.2% extra is the bookmaker's cut. Divide each implied probability by 1.072 to get a rough fair view of what the book thinks. Often only the over side is offered, which hides the margin. In that case, compare the price to your own number directly. Our odds calculator converts prices to probabilities quickly.

Worked example: value or no value?

You estimate λ = 0.9 for a striker who usually plays the full match against a weak defence, so your probability of at least one shot on target is 59.3%. Two bookmakers offer over 0.5.

PriceWin (₦1,000 stake)Expected value per ₦1,000Verdict
1.62+₦6200.593 × 620 − 0.407 × 1,000 ≈ −₦39Skip
1.80+₦8000.593 × 800 − 0.407 × 1,000 ≈ +₦67Small value

Same player, same match, very different decision. This is why price shopping matters so much in props. The edge in the good case is only about 6.7% of the stake, and your λ could easily be wrong by 0.1 or 0.2, so treat it as a small edge, not a sure thing. If your probability is not clearly above the break-even probability (1 divided by the odds), pass.

Lineups: the single biggest risk

Props move a lot when team news arrives, usually about an hour before kick-off. Betting the night before can give you a better price, but you take the risk that your player is benched or rested. Betting after lineups removes that risk, but prices on the obvious picks shorten fast.

A sensible routine for Nigerian punters, since many European matches kick off in the afternoon or evening West Africa Time:

Over 1.5 and higher lines

Over 1.5 shots on target pays much bigger odds, and that tempts people. Look again at the table: even a strong λ of 1.1 gives only about 30% for two or more, a fair price of about 3.32. Bookmakers know punters love these big numbers, so the margin is often larger here. Higher lines are not a bad bet in themselves, but your estimate has to be sharp. A small error in λ creates a big error in the probability of two or more. Keep stakes smaller on these lines.

Types of players who suit this market

Player typeWhy it mattersWhat to watch
Penalty-box strikerShoots from close range, high accuracyService from wingers; whether the team creates chances
Shoot-on-sight forward or midfielderHigh volume, lower accuracy, many blocksBlocked shots and long-range efforts often miss the target
Inside forward on the wingCuts in and shoots, decent volumeOpposing full-back quality
Set-piece takerDirect free kicks add chancesFree kicks are rare; do not overrate
Centre-back who heads at cornersLow λ but sometimes long pricesVery high variance; small stakes only

Volume is not accuracy. A midfielder with four shots a match from 30 metres can have fewer shots on target than a striker with two shots from inside the box. Always look at shots on target, not total shots.

Combining shot props with other bets

Bet builders let you combine a shot on target prop with other selections from the same match. Be careful: these legs are often linked. If you pick "player 1+ shot on target" and "over 2.5 goals", the two are positively connected, because a high-scoring game usually means more shots. Bookmakers know this and price bet builders to account for it, often with an extra margin. Multiplying the individual odds in your head does not tell you what the combo is really worth. If you want the maths for normal accumulators, our accumulator calculator helps, but remember that same-game legs are not independent.

Live shots on target betting

Many books keep shot props open during the match. Live betting can help when you see something the prices have not caught up with, such as a team clearly dominating but not yet testing the keeper. But the live price already reflects the time left. If your player has had no shot on target by the 60th minute and you thought his λ was 0.9 for 90 minutes, there are only about 30 minutes left, so his remaining λ is about 0.3 and the probability is only about 26%. Live prices also come with a delay and the book can suspend the market after dangerous attacks. Read our live betting guide before trying it.

Staking: small and steady

Shot props are high-variance bets, even when you have an edge. A run of five losers in a row is normal. Keep each stake to a small, fixed slice of your betting bankroll.

Common mistakes with shot props

A simple record sheet

Keep a record of every prop: date, match, player, line, price, your λ, your probability, whether he started, minutes played, result and profit. After 50 or 100 bets you will see whether your λ estimates are too high or too low. Most beginners find they overrate famous strikers and underrate how often players are subbed. Your own data will tell you more than any tipster.

Bottom line

To bet on player shots on target well, know exactly what counts, read your bookmaker's starting and settlement rules, build a per-90 number, adjust it for minutes and opponent, turn it into a probability with the simple Poisson table, and only bet when the price clearly beats your number. Questions punters ask

Does hitting the post count as a shot on target?

No. A shot that hits the post or crossbar and does not go in is not a shot on target under the standard definition.

Do blocked shots count as shots on target?

No. A shot blocked by an outfield defender is recorded as a blocked shot. A shot cleared off the line by the last defender is usually counted as on target.

What happens if my player does not start?

It depends on the bookmaker. Some void the bet if he does not play at all, some void only if he does not start, and some settle as normal once he comes on. Check the rules before betting.

Does extra time count for shots on target bets?

Usually not. Most football props settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Penalty shootouts are normally excluded.

How do I work out the chance of at least one shot on target?

Estimate the player's expected shots on target for the match (λ), adjusted for minutes and opponent, then use 1 − e^−λ. For example, λ = 0.9 gives about 59%.

Is Cloudbet licensed in Nigeria?

No. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator.
