My brother, video poker is the quiet corner of the online casino that serious players love and casual players overlook. It looks like a slot machine, but it plays like a card game where your decisions actually change the return. Pick the right paytable and play properly, and you can face one of the lowest house edges in the whole casino. Pick the wrong one or play by feel, and you can lose several times faster without noticing. This guide shows you how to tell the difference before you put real money down.
18+ only. Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024 (SC/1/2008), gambling in Nigeria is regulated by each state, for example by the LSLGA in Lagos, while the NLRC still covers the FCT. Cloudbet, the crypto casino we link to, is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator. We don't claim any particular video poker title or paytable is available at Cloudbet; check the casino lobby and each game's paytable yourself. Return figures below are widely published optimal-strategy values for each paytable, and the naira cost examples were worked out with a script from made-up stakes.

What video poker is (and isn't)
Video poker is a single-player game based on five-card draw. You're not playing against other people and there's no dealer bluffing you. The machine deals five cards from a freshly shuffled 52-card deck (some versions add jokers or treat deuces as wild). You choose which cards to hold, the rest are replaced, and the final hand is paid according to a fixed table on the screen.
Three things make it different from slots:
- The paytable tells you the return. Because the game is a standard deck with fixed payouts, the return for each paytable can be calculated exactly. With slots you only see an RTP figure the provider gives you.
- Your choices matter. The same hand can be held in different ways, and some ways are better than others. Bad holds lower your return.
- It's slower and calmer. No bonus-buy features, no flashing free-spin rounds. It's a card game with a screen.
It's also different from live poker against other players, which is a skill game where you win from opponents. If that's what you're after, read our guide to crypto poker in Nigeria instead.
The main video poker games you'll see
- Jacks or Better: the classic. You need at least a pair of jacks to get paid. The best starting point for beginners.
- Bonus Poker and Double Bonus: similar to Jacks or Better, but four-of-a-kind hands pay more and two pair usually pays less. More swing.
- Double Double Bonus: even bigger four-of-a-kind payouts, especially four aces with a kicker. High swing.
- Deuces Wild: all 2s are wild cards. Very different strategy; lower hands like a pair don't pay.
- Joker Poker: a joker is added as a wild card. Minimum paying hand is often kings or better.
- Multi-hand versions: you play 3, 10, 50 or even 100 hands at once from the same starting cards. Same maths per hand, much more money per deal.
How to read a paytable: 9/6 vs 8/5
Video poker players describe Jacks or Better paytables by two numbers: what a full house pays and what a flush pays, per coin. "9/6" means full house pays 9 and flush pays 6. Look at the full house and flush lines on the screen; that's usually where casinos quietly cut the return.
| Jacks or Better paytable | Widely published return with optimal play | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| 9/6 ("full pay") | 99.54% | 0.46% |
| 8/5 | 97.30% | 2.70% |
| 7/5 | 96.15% | 3.85% |
| 6/5 | 95.00% | 5.00% |
The game, graphics and rules look identical across these four. Only two numbers changed, and the house edge went from under half a percent to five percent, more than ten times bigger. That's why the first thing you do in any video poker game is open the paytable and check those two lines.
Other games have their own "full pay" tables. Full-pay Deuces Wild, for example, is widely published at just over 100% return with perfect strategy, but genuine full-pay versions are rare online. Most online Deuces Wild tables are cut somewhere, so check rather than assume.
What it costs per hour, in naira
Percentages can feel abstract. Here's the same table turned into cost, using made-up stakes. Say you play ₦200 per hand (five coins of ₦40) at about 600 hands an hour, a comfortable online pace. That's ₦120,000 of turnover an hour.
| Paytable | Expected cost per hour (600 hands × ₦200) | Expected cost for 300 hands |
|---|---|---|
| 9/6 Jacks or Better | about ₦552 | about ₦276 |
| 8/5 | about ₦3,240 | about ₦1,620 |
| 7/5 | about ₦4,620 | about ₦2,310 |
| 6/5 | about ₦6,000 | about ₦3,000 |
These are long-run averages assuming perfect strategy. In any single hour you could be up or down a lot more, because a big part of the return sits in rare hands like the royal flush. But over many sessions, picking 9/6 over 6/5 is like paying ₦552 for your evening instead of ₦6,000. Same game on screen, ten times cheaper.
And remember: those figures assume you play correctly. Bad holds push the cost higher, sometimes by a couple of percentage points.
Basic strategy rules for Jacks or Better
Perfect strategy charts are long, but a short set of rules gets most beginners close. Here's a simplified order of what to hold, from best to worst, for 9/6 Jacks or Better:
- Any paying hand of four-of-a-kind or better, straight flush and royal flush: hold it.
- Four cards to a royal flush: hold them, even if that means breaking a flush or straight.
- Three of a kind, straight, flush or full house: hold the made hand.
- Four to a straight flush.
- Two pair: hold both pairs.
- A high pair (jacks, queens, kings or aces): hold the pair.
- Three to a royal flush.
- Four to a flush.
- A low pair (2s to 10s): hold it. It beats drawing to most other hands.
- Four to an open-ended straight.
- Two suited high cards.
- Three to a straight flush.
- Two unsuited high cards (keep the lowest two if you have three).
- One high card.
- Nothing worth keeping: discard all five and redraw.
Common beginner mistakes this list fixes: keeping a kicker with a pair (don't, it lowers the return), throwing away a low pair to chase a straight, and holding a single high card next to a high pair. Many online games offer a "hint" or "auto-hold" option; turn it off and use a chart until the rules stick, so you actually learn them.
Strategy changes for other games. Deuces Wild and Double Double Bonus each have their own charts. Don't use Jacks or Better rules on them.
Why you should play max coins (when you can afford it)
Most video poker games pay the royal flush at 250 per coin for 1 to 4 coins, then jump to 800 per coin when you bet the maximum 5 coins. That jump matters more than it looks.
Under optimal Jacks or Better strategy, a royal flush lands roughly once every 40,000 hands. Our simple calculation using that rate: at 800 per coin, the royal adds about 2.0% to your return; at 250 per coin, only about 0.6%. Playing short coins gives up roughly 1.4 percentage points, which can turn a 99.54% game into something closer to an 8/5 table.
So the rule is: choose a coin size small enough that five coins fits your budget. ₦40 coins × 5 is better than ₦200 coins × 1, even though both cost ₦200 a hand.
By the way, a royal flush dealt straight off the first five cards is about 1 in 649,740 (there are 2,598,960 possible five-card hands and only 4 royals). Most royals come from holding three or four royal cards and drawing.

Bankroll and swings
Low house edge doesn't mean low swing. Because so much of video poker's return is locked in four-of-a-kinds and royals, you'll often lose steadily between big hands. Some practical rules of thumb:
- Jacks or Better is calmer than Double Double Bonus. If you want your budget to last, start with Jacks or Better.
- Multi-hand play multiplies your stake. Ten-play at ₦200 a hand is ₦2,000 a deal. The edge per hand is the same, but the money moves ten times faster.
- Set a session budget that survives a dry patch. Many players plan for at least a few hundred bets per session so normal ups and downs don't end the night in ten minutes.
- Don't chase the royal. It comes when it comes. Raising stakes to "catch" one only raises your cost.
Video poker and casino bonuses
Because video poker can have such a low edge, many casinos count it at a reduced rate toward bonus wagering or exclude it. Always check the game-contribution table in the bonus terms. Cloudbet's terms (8.5), for example, said when we checked that slots and arcade games with RTP above 99.5% and live or virtual table games count only 10% toward bonus wagering, with other slots counted according to their RTP.
Wager-free rewards are simpler. Cloudbet's welcome package terms (8.4), when we checked, described casino rakeback of 10% of the house edge for the first 30 days, along with cash drops, up to US$2,500, and the help centre called these real cash. On our example hour of ₦120,000 turnover on 9/6 Jacks or Better, the house edge amount is about ₦552, so 10% rakeback would return about ₦55, if the game counts. Nice to have; never the reason to play longer.
Choosing a crypto casino for video poker from Nigeria
Since offshore crypto casinos aren't licensed by Nigerian state regulators, run your own checks:
- Licence: find it in the footer and confirm it on the regulator's own site.
- Paytables: open every video poker game and note the full house and flush payouts. If you find 9/6 Jacks or Better, that's a good sign.
- Provider: games from established studios usually come with audited random number generators.
- Coin sizes: check you can play five coins at a stake that fits your budget.
- Deposits and withdrawals: check coins, networks, minimums and fees. Send only on the network the deposit screen shows.
- KYC: read when ID is required. Cloudbet's terms (18.1.5) say verification applies once cumulative deposits reach US$2,200.
- Test withdrawal: try a small one before building a balance.
Cloudbet's help centre listed BTC, ETH, LTC, USDT on several networks and many other coins when we checked, and its withdrawal article said withdrawals are typically processed within 24 hours. For other options, VegasAces lists video poker as one of its game categories on its own site; it's a separate brand with its own terms and banking, so read those before you join.
Video poker vs other casino games
| Game | House edge (typical, check each game) | Does skill change the return? |
|---|---|---|
| 9/6 Jacks or Better | 0.46% with perfect play | yes, a lot |
| Blackjack (good rules, basic strategy) | around 0.5% | yes |
| European roulette | 2.70% | no |
| Slots | often 3% to 5% | no |
If you enjoy decisions and patience, video poker is one of the best-value games in the casino. If you just want quick entertainment without learning anything, slots may be more fun, but they'll usually cost more per naira bet. Common video poker myths
- "The machine is due." Each deal is a fresh shuffle in a fair game. A long time without a royal doesn't make one more likely.
- "Holding a kicker improves my chances." In Jacks or Better, holding an extra high card with a pair lowers your return.
- "Online video poker is rigged because I never get four-of-a-kind." Four-of-a-kind is rare. You need many hundreds of hands before the numbers settle.
- "The paytable doesn't matter much." It matters more than anything else you control.
My take
Video poker rewards the player who does a little homework. Check the paytable, prefer 9/6 Jacks or Better when you find it, learn the basic holding rules, play five coins at a size you can afford, and keep sessions inside a budget. Do that and you're playing one of the cheapest games in the casino.
