what does odd or even mean in betting - football on a pitch

Somebody in your WhatsApp group drops a slip with "Odd" on five matches and swears it's the easiest market on the app. Another person says it's pure coin toss. Then a third person asks if "Even" means the odds are 2.00. My brother, all three are mixing things up a bit. Odd or even is a simple market, but there are a few details, like how a 0-0 settles and how the bookie's margin eats your money, that you need to know before you put your naira on it. Let's break it down properly.

Cloudbet, the sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator, such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA). Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, gaming is regulated state by state, and the federal National Lottery Act now covers only the FCT.

The short answer

In football, "odd or even" (sometimes written "Odd/Even" or "Total Goals Odd/Even") is a bet on whether the total number of goals in a match will be an odd number or an even number. You don't care who wins. You don't care how many goals exactly. You only care about the final total.

Yes, 0-0 counts as even, because zero is an even number. That one catches plenty of people, so remember it.

Quick settlement table

Final scoreTotal goalsOdd betEven bet
0-00LoseWin
1-01WinLose
1-12LoseWin
2-13WinLose
2-24LoseWin
3-25WinLose
4-26LoseWin

Notice that every draw is always even. 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3: all even totals. That's just maths, two equal numbers always add up to an even number. Keep it in mind, we'll come back to it.

Odd/even is not the same as "evens"

This is the biggest confusion, so let's clear it up. "Evens" or "even money" is a way of describing a price, not a market. A bet at evens pays back double your stake: decimal odds of 2.00, or fractional 1/1. So ₦1,000 at evens returns ₦2,000.

The odd/even market is about the number of goals. The Even selection might be priced at 1.85, 1.90, 1.95, or anything else the bookie decides. It's only "evens" if the price happens to be exactly 2.00, which is rare because of the bookie's margin.

So if someone says "I backed even", ask them: even goals, or even money? Different things.

Is it really 50/50?

It feels like a coin toss, and it's close, but not exactly. Football totals tend to cluster at 1, 2 and 3 goals, and the split between odd and even totals can lean a little one way depending on the league and the teams.

A few things push a match slightly toward even:

A few things push slightly toward odd:

The bookmaker knows all this, and sets the prices to reflect it. You won't find a team where odd lands 80% of the time. Expect the real split in most leagues to sit somewhere near 50/50, with small swings. If you read a "system" claiming odd or even is a guaranteed winner, close the tab.

The bookie's margin on odd/even

Because the market has two outcomes of roughly equal chance, a fair price for each side would be about 2.00. Bookies don't offer that. You'll usually see prices like these (illustrative):

SelectionPriceImplied probability
Odd1.8853.2%
Even1.9252.1%
Total105.3%

That total above 100% is the margin. Here it's about 5.3%. Over many bets, that's roughly the share of your stakes the bookie expects to keep. On a market this close to 50/50, the margin is everything. To make money over time, you need to be right noticeably more often than the price implies, and that's very hard on a market driven mostly by chance.

How to work out implied probability yourself: divide 1 by the decimal price. 1 / 1.88 = 0.532, so 53.2%. Add the two sides together to see the margin. If you shop around, you'll notice some books take a much bigger cut on odd/even than on the main 1X2 market. Compare before you bet.

Naira examples

Let's say you stake ₦2,000 on Odd at 1.88.

Now ₦2,000 on Even at 1.92.

The maths is identical to any two-way market. The difference with odd/even is that one late goal flips the result completely, no matter how the match was going.

Other versions of the odd/even market

Once you find the main market, you'll notice the app often offers more:

First half odd/even

Same idea, but only goals in the first 45 minutes plus stoppage time count. Because first halves are lower scoring, 0-0 at half-time is common, which leans this market toward even. Prices usually reflect that.

Second half odd/even

Only goals scored in the second half count. A match that's 1-0 at half-time and finishes 2-0 has one second-half goal, so the second-half total is odd, even though the full-time total is even. Read the market name carefully.

Home team or away team odd/even

Only one team's goals count. If the home team scores 0, 2 or 4, that's even. If they score 1 or 3, odd. A team that fails to score lands on even.

Corners and cards odd/even

Some books offer odd/even on total corners or total bookings. Corners in a match usually sit somewhere around 8 to 12, so it's genuinely closer to a coin flip. Card markets can count yellow and red cards differently, and some books use "booking points" instead of card counts, so check the rules.

Other sports

Basketball odd/even on total points is popular on Nigerian apps, especially for NBA games. With 200+ points scored, it's about as close to 50/50 as a sports bet gets, so the margin decides almost everything. Odd/even also shows up for tennis games, handball and some virtual sports.

Odd/even in accumulators

Because the prices are short, around 1.85 to 1.95, punters love stacking odd/even legs to build bigger odds. Let's be honest about what happens:

Legs at 1.90 eachCombined oddsFair chance if each leg is 50%
23.6125%
36.8612.5%
524.763.1%
8169.840.4%

For a fair payout on an 8-leg coin flip slip, you'd need odds of 256. You're getting about 170. That gap is the margin multiplied across every leg. The more legs you add, the more of your money the bookie keeps in the long run. Small accumulators are fun; big odd/even accumulators are mostly a donation.

Myths you'll hear in Nigerian betting groups

Is there any sensible way to bet odd/even?

If you enjoy it, treat it as entertainment with a small stake. If you want to think about it more seriously, the only real angle is the same as any market: your estimate of the chance must be better than the bookie's price. Some things you can look at:

  1. Expected goals in the match. Very low expected totals lean toward 0-0 and 1-1, which are even. If you expect a tight game around one or two goals, check whether even is priced fairly.
  2. Draw likelihood. Matches between two evenly matched, defensive sides draw more often. More draws mean more even totals.
  3. Price shopping. Because the edge is tiny, the difference between 1.85 and 1.95 matters more here than almost anywhere else. Over 100 bets of ₦1,000, that gap is worth about ₦5,000 in expected returns if each side wins about half the time.
  4. Know when to skip. If both sides are priced below 1.90 at your book, the margin is big. Skipping that market is a perfectly good decision.

For markets where your reading of the game counts for more, our guides on Asian totals and under 2.5 goals are a better place to spend your time.

How to find odd/even on your betting app

On most apps, open the match, then look through the market tabs. It's often under "Goals", "Totals", "Specials" or "Other". Some apps show it on the main list only for big leagues. For basketball, look under "Totals" or "Points". If you can't find it, use the market search box if the app has one.

Before you add it to a slip, confirm three things on the betslip: the match, the period (full time, first half or second half) and whether it's total goals or one team's goals. Those three details decide how it settles.

Where to bet odd/even from Nigeria

Nearly every Nigerian sportsbook lists odd/even on major football leagues, and many add it for basketball. Cloudbet, the offshore book we link to, offers a wide range of goal and total markets and accepts crypto. It's licensed in Curaçao, not by LSLGA or any other Nigerian state regulator, so there's no local regulator to complain to if something goes wrong. If you prefer a locally licensed operator, check the LSLGA register for the book's current licence before depositing.

Play it safe

Odd/even settles fast and feels like a coin toss, which makes it easy to keep clicking "bet again". Set a limit for the day before you start, and stop when you hit it. Never chase losses, never borrow to bet, and never use money meant for essentials.

How we put this page together

This page explains how sportsbooks commonly settle odd/even markets and the maths behind the prices. All odds, percentages and naira amounts are illustrations, not real prices from any bookmaker. Settlement rules for extra time, abandoned matches and card counting differ between books, so always read the rules of the sportsbook you use.

Bottom line

Odd or even asks whether the total goals land on an odd or even number. Zero counts as even, and every draw is even. It's different from "evens", which is a 2.00 price. The market is close to 50/50, so the bookie's margin decides most of the outcome over time. Keep stakes small, compare prices, skip the big accumulators, and don't trust anyone selling a pattern.

Questions punters ask

What does odd or even mean in betting?

It's a bet on whether the total goals in a match is an odd number (1, 3, 5) or an even number (0, 2, 4). Who wins doesn't matter.

Is 0-0 odd or even in betting?

Even. Zero is an even number, so a goalless draw settles as Even.

Are all draws even?

Yes. A draw means both teams scored the same number of goals, and two equal numbers always add up to an even total.

Is odd/even the same as evens?

No. 'Evens' describes a price of 2.00 (1/1). Odd/even is a market on the goal total. The Even selection is rarely priced at exactly 2.00.

Does extra time count for odd/even?

Usually not. Football odd/even normally settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Check the market rules on your sportsbook.

Do own goals count in odd/even?

Yes. Own goals are part of the official score, so they count toward the total.
