how to bet on afcon winner - football stadium panorama

Every Africa Cup of Nations, somebody in your street claims he "called it" from day one. Here is how to actually do it with a plan. This guide explains how to bet on the AFCON winner step by step: what an outright bet is, why tournament boards carry a heavy margin, how to work out a fair price from a team's likely path, and when cashing out or hedging makes sense.

18+ only. Since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024 (SC/1/2008), each state regulates gambling (the LSLGA in Lagos, for example) and the NLRC covers the FCT. Cloudbet, which we link for crypto sports betting, is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator. All odds in this guide are example numbers, and every probability is illustrative or script-computed. Teams on our sample board are labelled Team A, Team B and so on, because squads, form and draws change between editions.

What an AFCON winner bet is

An AFCON winner bet, also called an outright or "to lift the trophy" bet, is a single wager on which nation wins the whole tournament. You place it once and wait. It settles when the final whistle (or the final penalty) of the last match decides the champion. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs count, because the question is simply who takes the trophy home.

That makes it very different from a match bet. You are not predicting one 90-minute game; you are predicting a run of six or seven games, including a group stage and several knockout rounds where one bad night ends everything.

How the tournament is usually structured

Recent editions have used 24 teams split into six groups of four. The top two in each group go through, along with the four best third-placed teams, making a round of 16. From there it is straight knockout: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. CAF can change formats, so check the current rules for the edition you are betting on, but this structure is a good working model.

The important point for punters: a winner has to survive the group, then usually win four knockout matches in a row. Even a strong favourite has plenty of ways to fall.

Step 1: understand why outright boards look generous but are not

A tournament winner board lists every team with a price. Add up the implied chances (1 ÷ odds) for all 24 and you will see how much the bookmaker keeps. Here is a realistic example board:

TeamOddsTeamOddsTeamOdds
Team A5.00Team I17.00Team Q101.00
Team B6.00Team J21.00Team R101.00
Team C7.00Team K26.00Team S151.00
Team D8.00Team L34.00Team T151.00
Team E9.00Team M41.00Team U201.00
Team F11.00Team N51.00Team V251.00
Team G13.00Team O67.00Team W301.00
Team H15.00Team P81.00Team X501.00

Those 24 prices add up to an implied 127.3%. Compare that with about 105% on a normal match. In other words, the book is keeping a much bigger slice on outrights. The six favourites alone add up to 83.7% implied, which shrinks to 65.7% once you remove the margin proportionally. The twelve biggest outsiders together add up to 11.9% implied, and that is where a lot of the extra margin tends to hide, because casual punters love a long shot.

Lesson: on outright boards, you need a bigger gap between your price and the bookie's price before a bet is worth it. A 2–3% edge that works on a match bet is not enough here.

Step 2: price a team's path to the trophy

The cleanest way to price an outright is to multiply the chances of each stage. Take a chance of getting out of the group, then a chance of winning each knockout match, and multiply them together. Our script used these illustrative profiles:

ProfileOut of groupR16 / QF / SF / Final win chancesReach finalWin AFCONFair winner odds
Elite favourite90%66% / 60% / 55% / 52%19.6%10.2%9.81
Strong contender82%58% / 52% / 47% / 45%11.6%5.2%19.12
Dark horse70%50% / 43% / 38% / 36%5.7%2.1%48.57
Outsider55%42% / 35% / 30% / 28%2.4%0.7%147.25

Look closely at the elite row. A team that is better than almost every opponent, with a 90% chance of leaving the group and over 50% in every knockout, still wins the tournament only about one time in ten. That is why AFCON favourites rarely sit below 4.00 or 5.00, and why so many editions end with a surprise champion.

Step 3: compare your fair price with the board

Now plug your path chance into the board. Per ₦1,000 staked, the long-run result from our script looks like this:

Your profileYour win chanceBoard priceLong-run result per ₦1,000
Elite favourite10.2%9.00−₦82
Elite favourite10.2%12.00+₦224
Strong contender5.2%15.00−₦220
Strong contender5.2%26.00+₦352
Dark horse2.1%34.00−₦286
Dark horse2.1%51.00+₦71
Outsider0.7%101.00−₦293
Outsider0.7%201.00+₦407

Two things jump out. First, the same team can be a terrible or a decent bet depending only on the price. Second, the "positive" numbers on long shots come with very long losing runs. A 0.7% chance means you would expect to lose roughly 140 such bets for every one that lands. Positive on paper does not mean comfortable in real life.

What actually moves an AFCON team's chances

Use these factors to nudge your stage chances up or down, rather than guessing a final price from feel:

When to place your bet

TimingUpsideDownside
Months before (ante-post)Bigger prices before the market settlesInjuries, coach changes and the draw are unknown; money is tied up
Right after the group drawYou can price the path properlyPrices already reflect easy and hard groups
After the first group gameReal tournament form is visibleOverreaction risk: one result moves prices too much
At the quarter-final stageOnly eight teams left, clearer bracketShorter prices; less room for value

A balanced approach for most punters: wait for the draw, price every serious team's path, and bet only the one or two where your price beats the board by a wide gap.

Other tournament markets worth knowing

If the winner market feels too tough, these related bets can be easier to price:

Hedging when your team reaches the final

Suppose you backed a strong contender for ₦1,000 at 15.00 before the tournament, and they reach the final. Your slip now returns ₦15,000 if they win. The opponent is priced at 2.10 to lift the trophy. You have choices:

PlanHedge stake on opponentProfit if your team winsProfit if opponent wins
No hedge₦0+₦14,000−₦1,000
Full hedge₦7,143+₦6,857+₦6,857
Partial hedge₦3,000+₦11,000+₦2,300

A full hedge locks in the same profit either way. A partial hedge keeps most of the upside while guaranteeing you finish ahead. Hedging is not free (you pay margin on the second bet), so only do it if the locked profit genuinely matters to you. Many books also offer a cash-out; compare the cash-out figure with what a manual hedge would give and take the better one. Make sure the hedge market is also "to lift the trophy", so extra time and penalties are covered.

Nigeria and the patriotism question

Nigeria have won AFCON three times, in 1980, 1994 and 2013, and Naija punters naturally want the Super Eagles on their slip. That is fine, but price them the same way as everyone else. Heavy local support can make the Nigeria outright a little shorter on some books. Our Super Eagles betting tips page shows how to separate the fan from the punter on match bets too.

A simple AFCON outright routine

  1. Wait for the group draw and the official squads.
  2. For each team you rate, write a group-exit chance and four knockout win chances.
  3. Multiply them to get a win chance, then 1 ÷ chance for fair odds.
  4. Compare with the best price you can find. Demand a big gap, because the board margin is big.
  5. Keep outright stakes small, around 0.5–1% of your pot, and spread across one to three teams at most.

Our odds calculator helps with the conversions, and how to bet on African football covers venue and pitch effects that shape the stage chances.

Bottom line

Betting on the AFCON winner is about paths, not passion. Multiply each team's stage chances to get a fair price, remember the outright board carries a big margin, and only bet when the gap is wide. Wait for the draw, keep stakes small, and use hedges or cash-out wisely if your pick reaches the final. 18+ only. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator.

Questions punters ask

Does an AFCON winner bet include extra time and penalties?

Yes. A "to win the tournament" bet settles on who lifts the trophy, so extra time and penalty shoot-outs in the final count.

How many teams play at AFCON?

Recent editions have used 24 teams in six groups of four, with the top two plus the four best third-placed teams going to a round of 16. CAF can change the format, so check the current edition.

Why are AFCON favourites rarely very short?

A favourite must survive the group and usually win four knockout matches. In our example, even an elite side with over 50% in every knockout wins the title only about 10% of the time.

When is the best time to bet on the AFCON winner?

Many punters wait for the group draw, because it lets you price each team's likely path. Earlier prices can be bigger but carry more unknowns.

Is Cloudbet licensed in Nigeria?

No. Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by any Nigerian state regulator.
